Residents told to take precautions in light of Coldstream mailbox thefts

VERNON - Police are investigating a rash of mailbox thefts in Coldstream.

Over the last week, the Vernon RCMP was alerted to a number of mailboxes being broken into, Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy says.

On Feb. 13, Canada Post notified police of a series of thefts from community mailboxes in an area spanning Ravine Drive, Upland Drive, Crestview Drive and Kalamalka Road in Coldstream.

A few days later, on Feb. 17, Canada Post again called police, this time to report four thefts from community mailboxes in the Coldstream around Learmouth Road and Bessette Road.

In most cases, the mailboxes appear to have been pried open, Noseworthy says. Theft of mail can lead to serious cases including fraud or identity theft, so police are reminding residents to take precautions.

Noseworthy recommends picking up your mail as soon as possible to minimize the chance of having your items stolen.

“We are also asking residents to report any suspicious actively around community mailboxes to RCMP,” Noseworthy says.

In January, there were a series of thefts from community mailboxes in the Vernon area over the course of a week.

Police are investigating the possibility that the same person is responsible for all the thefts, but can't say for sure.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP at 250-545-7171 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
