VERNON - Russel the cat is always pulling wild and ridiculous stunts, but a recent vanishing act is worrying his owners.

Russel, a fixture of AJ’s Pets & Things for nearly seven years, has been missing since Aug. 20.

While possible, owner Lisa Badach says it’s not like the champagne coloured tabby to wander out an open door.

“The possibility is there that he was (stolen),” Badach says. “We hope not, we don’t want to make that accusation.”

This isn’t the first time Russel has gone missing. Roughly two years ago, he disappeared for four and a half weeks before someone found him being fed at Howard House. Badach says there was no way for him to have slipped out that time, and is certain someone took him to the half way house.

Badach believes he’ll make it back this time too, though she’s worried for his well being. You could say Russel has already used up some of his nine lives. He was born with a heart murmur and respiratory problems and Badach was advised to put him down, but she couldn't do it.

“Here was a cat destined to be put down and we chose not to,” Badach says.

Russel quickly became the store’s beloved mascot, constantly finding new and unusual places to nap.

“He does some of the craziest stuff in this store. I’ve never had a cat be as bizarre as he is,” Badach says.

She plans to put his photo up around town and review the store’s video surveillance footage. Anyone who knows where he is can call the store at 250-549-3222.

“He’s a huge part of our life,” Badach says. “He’s a pretty neat coworker.”
