VERNON - Vernon council trashed a series of design ideas for the city’s new welcome signs, calling for more playfulness and vibrancy.
This week council was shown three options for the signs, which are being redone, but quickly sent staff back to the drawing board.
The draft designs featured wood material, and a large white surface with ‘Vernon’ on the front, with interchangeable panels on the back showcasing various images travellers would see upon leaving the city.
“I have a bit of a problem with a lack of anything written on the front,” Coun. Scott Anderson said.
He suggested using a phrase on the front, the city’s ‘Activate life’ slogan or something fun like ‘We’ve been waiting for you.’
“It fulfills the excitement, youthfulness, playfulness, and it’s unique,” Anderson said.
Coun. Lord agreed the front of the signs looked too bland.
“It doesn’t pop,” she said, adding it's odd the panels on the signs, which include images of skiing, boating and other activities, were on the backs of the signs, not the fronts. “It seems odd we’d have art on the back that is talking about what you can do in the city as they’re leaving the city. I guess what we’re saying is can you go back to the drawing board?”
Staff will be bringing new options to council at a future date. The new signs will be located on Highway 97 near Swan Lake, on Highway 6, and near the Vernon Army Camp on Highway 97.
