MERRITT - The provincial government has temporarily shut down fishing on the Nicola River, Coldwater River and Spius Creek to protect certain species of fish.

Due to rising water temperature, steelhead and other trout are at risk of health risks, according to a media release from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

The closure will remain in effect until further notice, and mirror a federal steelhead closure on the same rivers.

When stream temperatures rise above 20 C the motality rate of catch-and-release trout increases, the release states.
