Most of Thompson-Okanagan well shy of record snowfall amounts

Nearly enough snow fell in Kamloops to set a new record over the past two days.

ONLY KELOWNA COMES CLOSE

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN - Nearly enough snow fell on Kelowna to set new two-day snowfall records this week but it was nowhere near the amount that fell on Penticton in 1932.

The storm began late Saturday evening and had ended in much of the region by Monday evening. After two days of solid snow (Sunday and Monday) the final total for the Kamloops Airport was 39 centimetres, just shy of the 39 cm of snow that fell in December 1927, but well shy of the 53 cm record set in 1885.

“Kamloops is known for being dry, even in the winter, so to have that much snow is remarkable,”  Meteorologist Lisa Coldwells says.

In Kelowna unofficial reports of 38 cm around the city put it close to the November 1937 record of 38 cm, but official numbers pegged the two-day snowfall total at 33 cm at the airport. Vernon also saw about 40 cm of snow, unofficially, but that is still 10 cm shy of the two-day record that was set in February 1937.

With just 26 cm Penticton was the furthest off hitting a record snowfall amount in the region. The current two-day snowfall record was set in March 1932 and sits at 55 cm.

Other unofficial numbers from around the region include 46 cm in Salmon Arm, 26 cm at the Coquihalla Summit and 24 cm at the Pennask Summit.

The heavy snowfall forced closures of schools across the region, many of which remained closed Tuesday. City crews have been working around the clock to remove snow from main roadways and have moved on to side streets in some areas.
