VERNON - Police are appealing to the public for information after a mother and daughter were injured in a hit and run Friday night.

RCMP say the 55-year-old woman and her 17-year-old daughter were cycling in the 8400-block of Buchanan Road in Coldstream when they were hit by a car and thrown from their bikes around 8 p.m. Friday, May 6.

The mother, Mae Hooper, suffered a concussion and back injuries, while her daughter Hannah Mehain had scrapes and bruises, according to Mae’s sister Catherine Hooper. Both were taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital where Mae remains in serious condition, while Hannah was treated and released.

When hit, Mae was thrown 15-feet into rocks in the ditch along Buchanan Road and both bicycles were badly mangled, she says.

Catherine says a white car had narrowly missed hitting the pair only five minutes before, leaving them shaken. The mother and daughter continued on staying as far to the right a possible, with Mae getting Hannah to take the lead in an effort to keep her safe.

She says her sister and niece are local athletes who were training together Friday night when they were struck. Hannah just recently got back from the World Junior Women’s Nordic Ski championships in Romania and graduates from Seaton Secondary this year.

RCMP are asking for the public’s help to identify the suspect vehicle, a dark-coloured, full-size, newer pickup truck. It possibly has damage to the front end on the passenger side.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Vernon RCMP detachment at 250-545-7171 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
