A transit activism group is promoting a silent moment of remembrance next week for the anniversary of a murder on a Kelowna bus.

Caesar Rosales, 55, was the victim of a brutal stabbing in 2014. Every year since then, there's been a moment of silence to honour his memory.

The Central Okanagan Transit Action Alliance is asking transit users and workers to observe a minute of silence at noon on Monday, Oct. 30. The event is also to remind people of the need to improve transit safety.

The alliance is encouraging people across Canada to participate.

“We the operators and riders of transit systems across this country invite you to participate and engage in the enhancement of a safe environment on and off the bus,” the alliance said on Facebook.

Rosales was stabbed to death by Tyler Newton on a Kelowna bus nine years ago.

Rosales was reportedly asleep on the bus when Newton stabbed him in the neck. A few hours later Newton was arrested. In court he pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, but confessed to manslaughter.

Newton, now 32, was sentenced to seven years for manslaughter, but was released early in 2019.

Since Newton’s release he has been in and out of jail for various crimes, including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of stolen property over $5,000. Newton is currently in police custody and scheduled to appear in court in November.
