VERNON - Vernon RCMP have arrested a suspect they believe left the scene of a crash that left a woman with serious spinal injuries Dec. 3, 2014.

The accident between a blue Jeep and a Hyundai car happened at roughly 5:30 p.m. at 39 Avenue and Alexis Park Drive. The driver of the Jeep was seen running away while the 44-year-old driver of the Hyundai remained in her car, suffering from her injuries, according to an RCMP media release. She was taken by ambulance to Vernon Jubilee Hospital and later transferred to Vancouver General Hospital where she remains.

Mounties used evidence from the crash scene and leads coming in following a public appeal, to locate and arrest a 20-year-old Vernon resident.

“A team of officers were assigned to this case," Insp. Jim McNamara said in the release. "They never gave up on finding the person responsible for this terrible crash that left a seriously injured woman trapped in her car.”

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk said potential charges of hit and run and negligence causing bodily harm are expected.
