WEST KELOWNA - A realtor from West Kelowna is one of 50 contestants who will appear on the CTV show Masterchef Canada, premiering January 10.

Kaila Klassen's current job is real estate agent for RE/MAX Kelowna. She seems to bring a passion to her work, evidenced by the Rising Star award she earned within the company in 2011 along with a medallion recognizing her hard work.

But Klassen's passion for cooking began in her youth. She told producers that growing up, her family had little money so she was raised on a bland diet of meat and potatoes. It was her father who introduced her to sophisticated culinary options, taking her to a fine dining restaurant when she was 17. She said the experience awoke her senses.

From that day on, she satisfied her cravings for finer things by recreating her favourite restaurant meals at home. Now her artful passtime has earned her a spot on the Canadian chef competition show. She hopes to someday open a gourmet burger restaurant.

There are two other contestants from British Columbia. Carly Tennant is a retail clothing store owner from Vancouver, and Danielle Cardozo is an employment development officer from Cranbrook. The amateur chef contestants will participate in individual and team-based competitions with weekly eliminations until the champion is crowned.
