Local artists discuss drawing in Quick Talks

KELOWNA - The Kelowna Art Gallery presents Quick Talks on Saturday, March 7, 2015, from 1 to 3 pm, in conjunction with our current exhibition, Ron Shuebrook: Drawings.

Senior Canadian artist Ron Shuebrook along with local artists Johann Wessels and Myron Campbell, will talk about the role of drawing in their work, and reflect on the role of drawing in the post-skills, post-post-modern world we inhabit. Talks will be back-to-back, after which artist Katherine Pickering will moderate a discussion between the panel and audience. Quick Talks are free to attend and open to the public.

Ron Shuebrook: Drawings will be on view at the Gallery from March 7 to April 26, 2015.

Speakers’ Biographies

Ron Shuebrook is a senior Canadian artist who currently divides his time between Guelph, Ontario, and a summer home and studio in Nova Scotia. He holds a BSc and MEd in art education from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania, as well as an MFA from Kent State University, Ohio. He has taught and been an administrator at many institutions in the USA and Canada, including the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, the Ottawa School of Art, the Ontario College of Art and Design (now OCAD University) and the University of Guelph. His works are in the collections of over fifty galleries, museums, and corporations, and in addition to his practice in drawing, Shuebrook has a companion body of work in painting. His current drawing exhibition at the Kelowna Art Gallery runs from March 7 to April 26, 2015.

Johann Wessels was born in South Africa, where he graduated with a BFA from the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein and taught printmaking and art history for many years. When he came to Canada in 2000, he switched to digital printmaking and worked in the film and television business for a number of years. Wessels currently resides in Penticton and now focuses his attention on his freelance illustration and fine art, allowing them to meet somewhere in the middle. He is a master of mimesis and verisimilitude, but also of distortion and the surreal. His current commission Side Show is on display at the Kelowna International Airport until May 11, 2015.

Myron Campbell is an instructor of 2D and Media Arts in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBCO. He works predominantly with online interactive animation but includes drawings, paintings and hand-made books in his larger installations. Campbell completed an MAA with distinction at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2012, and received the Governor General’s Gold Medal for academic excellence. Much of his work consists of interactive animations made presentable on the internet, where the online virtual space serves also as a gallery space. More recently, he has been exploring the combination of virtual and physical elements in installations, playing with a fluid notion of what space is. With support from the BC Arts Council, he is currently working on a new piece entitled Observations of William Wynter, which presents the dwelling / research space of a fictitious cryptozoologist.

Katherine Pickering received an MFA in Studio Art from Concordia University's Painting and Drawing Department in 2009, and a BFA in Visual Art from the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus, in 2006. She has exhibited and attended residencies in Turkey, Iceland, and Canada, including residencies at the Banff Centre (2008), the Vermont Studio Center (2011 and 2013), and the Terra Nova National Park Artist in Residence Program in Newfoundland (2011). She lives in Vernon, British Columbia and teaches at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in downtown Kelowna. For more information about current exhibitions, public programming or special events, please visit the Kelowna Art Gallery online at www.kelownaartgallery.com or call 250-762-2226.
