Several Kelowna teachers have won the Premier’s Award for Excellence in Education.

Of the 34 education professionals given the award, six work in Kelowna, according to a press release from Oct. 28.

“The dedication of these recipients reflects the many exceptional educators in Central Okanagan Public Schools,” Kevin Kaardal, Central Okanagan’s Superintendent of Schools, said in the release.

The Ministry of Education started giving out the Premier Award in 2018. The award includes $2,000 given to each teacher for professional learning, and $1,000 towards professional learning for their school. There are ten categories educators could be awarded for.

Winners from Constable Neil Bruce Middle School are; Amanda Liebel for extracurricular leadership, Lauren Klassen for outstanding new teacher, and Danielle Brown for outstanding teaching assistant.

Jim Elwood from Mount Boucherie Secondary won for Indigenous education. Two teachers from École Kelowna Secondary were awarded, Rob Bennett for outstanding new teacher, and Amanda Hilverda for outstanding teaching assistant.

“Student well-being is always at the heart of our work,” Lee-Ann Tiede, Chairperson for the Board of Education, said. “From our new teachers to our long-serving educators, these award recipients represent the many professionals in our district who go above and beyond to provide rich opportunities for all students.”
