Kelowna RCMP launch homicide investigation into death of security guard at UBCO

A security guard has died in hospital following an alleged assault at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna on the weekend, and RCMP are now investigating the incident as a homicide.

Kelowna RCMP initially responded to a report, Feb. 26, that a security guard on campus was assaulted by a man working at the University Centre building.

"The victim, a 24-year-old woman, has succumbed to her injuries sustained as a result of this incident," reads the RCMP's latest press release.

Shortly after the incident occurred, the suspect was identified and apprehended under the Mental Health Act. He remains in hospital and is possibly facing murder charges, according to the RCMP.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and the RCMP is working with UBCO.

Lesley Cormack, deputy vice-chancellor and principal of UBCO, said in a statement this was an isolated incident that does not pose an ongoing risk to campus safety.

"I also understand that many on campus will feel shaken by this news and I encourage everyone to seek out the support and services offered to students, faculty and staff," she said, in a statement.

The UNC building on campus was closed at the time of the incident but has since reopened, according to UBCO. The incident did not involve students.
