Kelowna just made it easier to rent out that extra room

KELOWNA – The increasing lack of affordable housing in Kelowna has caused City Hall to relax their secondary suite rules.

In most residential areas, homeowners will now be allowed to rent a room or basement suite without rezoning their property or having a business licence.

Urban planning manager Terry Barton told Council the change will require no new infrastructure.

“This change will help provide more affordable housing stock in Kelowna with minimal impact to neighbourhoods by adding more rental options and can act as mortgage helpers to families," he says.

A secondary suite still must have an occupancy permit and must provide additional off-street parking.

More information is available on the City of Kelowna website.
