UPDATE: 11:36 a.m. Nov. 23

The B.C. Coroner's Service has released the identity of the woman killed in the crosswalk on Victoria St. and 6th Ave. in Kamloops Nov. 21. She is 67-year-old Valerie Brook of Kamloops. Police continue their investigation.

10: 56 a.m. Nov. 22

A man who struck and killed a 66-year-old Kamloops woman Wednesday evening was prohibited from driving, say police.

Kamloops City RCMP say the woman was hit in the crosswalk on Victoria St. at 6th Ave. around 5:25 p.m. as she was walking south. She was attended by police, paramedics and the Kamloops Fire Rescue team who provided emergency medical care on the scene, but was pronounced dead at Royal Inland Hospital.

Police say a 62-year-old Kamloops man was behind the wheel of the 2002 Ford F-150 but he was prohibited from driving under the Motor Vehicle Act. They say the accident occurred when the driver, travelling north on 6th Ave. stopped at the intersection and turned left onto Victoria as the woman was crossing. There are traffic lights at this intersection. The man remained at the location and spoke with investigators from the RCMP before being released.

RCMP collision analysts called to the scene took measurements and collected evidence so investigators can reconstruct the crash. As part of the investigation, the truck was impounded by police and will be given a complete mechanical inspection.

Drugs and alcohol have been eliminated as factors in the crash. A complete report of the incident will be compiled and forwarded to the Crown for review and assessment of charges. Police will recommend that the driver be summoned to court in relation to Provincial Motor Vehicle Act charges of Driving While Prohibited and Failing to Yield for a Pedestrian. No decision on charge recommendation under the Criminal Code will be made until the investigation is complete.

The victim's name is not being released at this time.

Anyone who witnessed the crash that has not yet spoken to police is asked to call Cst. Mackenzie of the Kamloops RCMP Traffic Section.
