The director of a Kamloops short film has decided to release it online for people to watch for free in the spirit of Christmas giving.

Cjay Boisclair directed Stood Up, a four minute feel-good flick that has garnered more than 50 awards and nominations since it was filmed in Kamloops in 2017.

"Normally we would have released via streaming services," Boisclair said. "But we decided with COVID and the way that the world’s going that we just wanted to add some cheer and some inspiration into the world and make people feel good."

Stood Up stars Once Upon a Time actor Jason Burkart, a man tired of always being the best friend and wing-man. He is waiting for his blind date, but little does he know she arrived, saw him and left.

But as all the classic love stories do, the story takes a turn for the better.

Boisclair was inspired to write the script when her grandma passed away, right around the time the Women in the Director’s Chair was running a short screenplay contest.

"For me it was a really tragic thing and hard to get over. I just needed something that was the opposite of what I was feeling," she said.

"I just sat down with these memories of my Oma and watching all these black and white romances and Elvis movies, Shirley Temple, everything that was sweet and good from that day and age, and this is what came about."

The screenplay won the contest, and went on to be selected in 95 film festivals internationally.

Stood Up also stars Battlestar Galactica actress Rekha Sharma, and features supporting cast and a full crew entirely from Kamloops.

Stood Up also stars Battlestar Galactica actress Rekha Sharma, and features a supporting cast and a full crew entirely from Kamloops.

"We're actually extremely motivated to film here, because as a part of our film community, we want it to grow," she said. "So we're making sure whenever we make productions, home grown, that we do it here and involve local cast."

Because they need to rent production equipment from Vancouver, filming in Kamloops is more expensive, she said, but it's worth it to support local.

"Most of the crew that was on Stood Up was either very new to the industry, or completely new," she said.

"We don't have a lot of trained crew here, which is what we're trying to change."

Stood Up will be released online Friday Dec. 18 on Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram.
