Kamloops RCMP seize drugs, cash, stolen property

Kamloops RCMP Supt. Brad Mueller shows some of the drugs and cash seized after a significant bust in Kamloops last month.

KAMLOOPS - An investigation into street level drug trafficking has led to a significant bust by Kamloops RCMP.

At a news conference today, Sep. 7, Supt. Brad Mueller says on Aug. 25, several units of the Kamloops RCMP executed search warrants at a hotel room and a vehicle.

The room is believed to have been a safe house for money and drugs.

Police officers stopped suspects in a vehicle which led to the warrants being executed.

"Kamloops RCMP has made a significant disruption in drugs in our community," Mueller says.

Five men and one woman are facing numerous drug related charges, and charges of possessing property obtained by crime. All of them are from Kamloops, except for one man who is from Vancouver.

All of the suspects were previously known to police, Mueller says, and some are known to be associated to the Red Scorpions gang, but it is not yet known if they are members of the group.

The drugs seized in the investigation include more than 1,100 grams of cocaine, 434 grams of heroin, 480 grams of meth, 34 grams of crack-cocaine, 17 grams of Xanax and 40 grams of unknown substances.

"We anticipate that fentanyl will come back (in some of the drugs seized)," Mueller says.

More than $18,000 cash was seized during a drug bust in Kamloops last month. RCMP say the street-level operation was earning about $5,000 per day.

Police also seized score sheets which are used by drug dealers to keep track of transactions, more than $18,000 cash, a 2008 BMW 128i and several cell phones.

Mueller says the money seized indicates the operation was earning about $5,000 per day. He says the investigation took place over a few days, although police are always gathering intelligence about street level drug operations.

The drugs, cash and alleged stolen property were on display at the detachment today, and Targeted Enforcement Unit officer Louis-Philippe Gendron-Fafard, along with Mueller, pointed out the dangers the fentanyl crisis is posing to drug users.

One baggie of drugs was labelled 'MIX?'.

"Drug dealers don't even know sometimes what they're putting in their own stuff," Gendron-Fafard says.

"That's a scary thing there, the one that has the mix in it," Mueller added.

Mueller hopes significant busts like these send a message to drug dealers in the city.

Kamloops RCMP say this baggie of drugs in particular is a concern, indicating drug dealers may not even know what kind of product they're putting out.
