VANCOUVER - Henrik Sedin beat a friend and former teammate for the 1,000th point of his NHL career.

The captain of the Vancouver Canucks reached the milestone on Friday night with a goal in the second period against the Florida Panthers.

Sedin took a pass from twin brother Daniel on a 2-on-1 rush and moved in alone before sliding a backhand through Roberto Luongo's five-hole.

The Canucks spilled over the boards to mob the 36-year-old as the crowd at Rogers Arena roared its approval.

Luongo, who played in Vancouver from 2006 to 2014, then stopped Sedin to congratulate him as the Canucks headed off the ice.

Sedin stood near the benches as the raucous applause continued for a few more minutes, clapping his hands over his head in appreciation.

The Canucks played a tribute to Sedin on the video board above centre ice during the next TV timeout, with players from both teams watching intently.

Sedin is the 85th player in NHL history to hit the 1,000-point mark, and just the 38th to accomplish the feat with one franchise. Washington Capitals sniper Alex Ovechkin reached the same milestone on Jan. 11.

In his 16th NHL season, Sedin now has 233 goals and 767 assists in 1,213 career games.

Sedin, the fourth-highest scoring Swedish-born player all-time, has missed just 30 games in his career.

Daniel Sedin, who has missed 53 games in his career, now sits at 968 points.
