KELOWNA - Knox Mountain Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic due to an extremely high fire hazard effective today. The upper gate has been closed since June 22.
“The entire park will remain open to the public on foot or by bike, but we are limiting access by vehicle as a preventative safety measure,” City of Kelowna’s Urban Forestry Supervisor Blair Stewart says in a release. “While our wildfire fuel mitigation program has been successful, we need residents to consider preventive measures as well; especially those living near natural areas.”
The Kelowna Fire Department developed the caretaker’s house on the top of Knox Mountain to provide a demonstration of ideal property conditions. An interpretive sign was placed on-site to provide tips for reducing fire risk on personal property. Residents can also learn more about FireSmart initiatives by visiting kelowna.ca/fire.
The Knox Mountain Drive road closure will remain in effect until city staff has assessed that it is safe to reopen the road.
Residents are reminded that campfires and barbecues are not allowed in city or regional district parks, with the exception of barbecues on beaches. Smoking is also prohibited in all natural areas.
Park users and park neighbours are asked to be vigilant. Anyone who notices smoke or fire in any park should immediately call 9-1-1 to speak to the fire department or *5-5-5-5 on your cell phone for the B.C. Wildfire Management Branch.
