PENTICTON - With a month to go before the federal election, the Green Party of Canada has finally announced a candidate for the South Okanagan-West Kootenay riding.

Samantha Troy, a resident of Rossland since 1996, will represent the party in the upcoming Oct. 19 federal election.

Troy, who is working toward a masters degreee in environmental studies, spent 20 years as a forestry professional and currently works at Red Mountain Ski Resort in outdoor operations and in dispatch. She is shop steward and health and safety chair for the local steelworkers union as well.

“Pine beetle, drought, rain instead of powder skiing days and range land lost to fire all hurt my riding. We need a new federal government that understands the economy and environmental protection are both related and important,” she says.

Troy says she she realizes the importance of resource sector and tourism jobs have on the riding, and is concerned about how climate change is affecting both the environment and the economy, which is why she joined the Green Party.

“As a working mom, passionate and resourceful, Samantha offers an excellent choice for voters in South Okanagan-West Kootenay on October 19,” Green Party of Canada B.C. organizer Carrie McLaren says.
