CENTRAL OKANAGAN - An unprecedented early start to the kokanee salmon spawning season has prompted the Central Okanagan Regional District to move forward the start of its interpretive programs up to this weekend.
The regional district said in a press release kokanee have already begun entering Deep Creek in Peachland and is the earliest known start to the annual spawning season.
A parks interpreter who normally begins work in late August at Hardy Falls Regional Park in Peachland will begin offering information Sunday, August 7 about the life cycle of the Kokanee and the importance of their annual return.
And the annual Welcome the Kokanee Salmon Festival, previously scheduled for August 28, is moving up three weeks to August 7 from 3 p.m.
The event generally coincides with the return of the Kokanee and will feature family-friendly events hosted by a parks interpreter.
The parks interpreter will be on duty every Sunday until September 11 from noon to four p.m.
The interpretation program at Mission Creek Regional Park on Springfield Road in Kelowna will run the same hours every Saturday and Sunday from August 27 to October 2.
