PENTICTON - The City of Penticton wants you to slow down and take a look at what the city has to offer.
Speed limits in the commercial downtown core are now a uniform 30 km/h.
Following last year’s Martin Street upgrades, a need to have a more pedestrian-friendly downtown was envisioned by mayor and council. Speeds limit on Martin Street and Westminster Avenue changed after the revitalization project completed last spring, and public consultation took place through several sessions held last summer.
Council approved the speed limit changes last fall. Speed limits of 30 km/h are now consistent in the downtown core, as prior to the change, some streets had a minimum limit of 50 km/h.
Executive Director of the Downtown Penticton Association, Kerri Milton, said, “The Downtown Penticton Association is happy to support such and important initiative, we want everyone to come downtown and enjoy themselves, and speed is a dangerous issue and we are hopeful this will help.”
The speed limits change this month.
