KAMLOOPS - A 29-year-old Merritt thief is probably wishing he just stayed home last night.

As he went around Savona last night checking vehicles for valuables, he first grabbed a chainsaw from the back of a pickup truck but didn't know he was spotted, according to a release by RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Cheryl Bush. The owner of the chainsaw phoned police and followed the thief and watched as he broke into another vehicle nearby.

While the thief was occupied, the owner of the chainsaw managed to retrieve the saw because the thief left his own trunk open.

The thief then fled the area at high speed, only to crash his vehicle off Highway 1. He tried to escape on foot, but was quickly tracked by a police dog.

Police arrested and charged the man, who is 'known to police.'
