Challenge Penticton challenges drivers

PENTICTON - The city will be bustling with athletes, coaches and families this weekend as everyone gets ready for the second Challenge Penticton triathlon race on Sunday.

There are all kinds of family-friendly events planned including fun runs, a junior triathlon race, a party in the park, free yoga and a charity swim. The weekend wraps up with fireworks on Sunday night at Okanagan Lake.

But of course along with the events and races, come road closures.

Here is a compete list:

Thursday, Aug. 21
5 a.m. Lakeshore Drive from Main Street to Winnipeg Street
5 a.m. The 100 block of Main Street
5 a.m. The Lakeshore Resort parking lot
5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Lakeshore Drive from Martin Street to Riverside Drive; and Riverside Drive to Burnaby Avenue — 1Kids Fund Run and 5K Fun Run

Sunday, Aug. 24 - RACE DAY
4 a.m. Lakeshore Drive from Riverside Drive to Martin Street
4 a.m. Main Street from Lakeshore Drive to South Beach Road
4 a.m. Martin Street from Lakeshore Drive to Westminster Avenue
4 a.m. Westminster Avenue from Martin Street to Main Street
4 a.m. Skaha Lake Road northbound from Highway 97 to Kinney Avenue (local traffic only)
5 a.m. North end of Main Street — Special Needs bag drop off and body marking
6:30 a.m. Lakeshore Drive at Winnipeg Street — Pro Swim Start
6:45 a.m. Lakeshore Drive at Winnipeg Street — Full and Full Relay Start
7:30 a.m. Lakeshore Drive at Winnipeg Street — Half and Half Relay Start
8:55 a.m. Main Street, downtown —Swim course closed, all participants on bike course
10 a.m. Eastside Road limited to local traffic until midnight
5:15 p.m. Main Street, downtown — Bike course closed, all participants on run course
8 p.m Skaha Lake Road northbound from Highway 97 to Kinney Avenue reopens
11:45 p.m. Lakeshore Drive at Martin Street — Race ends

Monday, Aug. 25
2 a.m. Lakeshore Drive from Riverside Drive to Martin Street reopens
2 a.m. 4 a.m. Main Street from Lakeshore Drive to South Beach Road
2 a.m. Martin Street from Lakeshore Drive to Westminster Avenue
2 a.m. Westminster Avenue from Martin Street to Main Street
Noon 100 Block Main Street reopened
Noon Lakeshore Drive from Main Street to Winnipeg reopened
4:00 p.m. Lakeside Resort parking lot reopened

Access to and from, and across Main Street will be restricted with the following exceptions:
Nanaimo Avenue — emergency vehicles and buses only
Eckhardt Avenue — controlled by RCMP or flaggers
Duncan Avenue — controlled by RCMP or flaggers
Industrial Avenue — controlled by RCMP or flaggers
Warren Avenue — emergency vehicles only
Green Avenue — controlled by RCMP
