Bus cameras in Kamloops, privacy issues raised

KAMLOOPS - B.C. Transit is installing surveillance cameras in 25 new buses rolling out in Kamloops next year, but the B.C. Civil Liberties Association is questioning the move.

Policy director Micheal Vonn says the transit authority must provide proof the cameras actually improve passengers' safety.

Vonn says there are many details that need to be considered — whether passengers are given notice, how long the information is retained and how it will be used and secured.

She says the company has a legal obligation to examine those issues when personal data is gathered.
