KELOWNA - Fire crews were at a multi-unit building in Rutland early Friday evening battling a vehicle fire in an underground garage.

Kelowna Fire Department was called to Birch Manor at 530 Franklyn Road at about 4:13 p.m., June 3. Platoon captain Tim Light says the fire started in a parked vehicle and was mostly confined to the underground garage.

Neighbours say they saw flames coming out of a vent and melting the vinyl siding however firefighters were able to put it out quickly. Light says the fire didn’t do any structural damage, but the vehicle was a total loss.

Residents in the area say mostly seniors live in the three-storey building, which was evacuated. Light says they were allowed back into their homes when CO levels returned to normal levels.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire was accidental.
