Brown Road reopens in Westbank Centre

WEST KELOWNA - The District of West Kelowna has reopened Brown Road between Main Street and Bering Road, just in time for the influx of holiday traffic into Westbank Centre. The section of road had been closed since August 26 for a significant Westbank Centre Revitalization project.

Pedestrians are advised to watch for uneven curbs when crossing Brown Road because only the first layer of asphalt was placed before cold weather set in. The topcoat of asphalt will be laid down in the spring. Sidewalks are open from Apollo Road north and those from Apollo Road extending south to Main Street will remain closed until they can be completed when warmer weather returns. Landscaping will also be completed in spring. Please pay attention to posted signs in the area.

On August 2, 2013, Council awarded a construction contract, in the amount of $2,586,619, to R & L Excavating Ltd. for Brown Road Streetscape Improvements Phase 1. The project includes: roadway improvements and repaving; creation of designated parking areas; sidewalks and curb and gutter installations; the addition of landscaping, irrigation, street furniture and ornamental lampposts; and sewer, drainage and water main upgrades. The total project budget is $3.1 million when factoring in costs such as design, inspection and moving overhead utilities underground.

The District of West Kelowna would like to thank the Government of Canada and Province of BC for providing funding assistance through the Gas Tax Community Works Fund, BC Hydro for aiding in the costs of placing utilities underground and ICBC for safety-related contributions under the Road Improvement Program.
