KAMLOOPS — Four Kamloops firefighters spent nearly three hours extinguishing a tractor-trailer hauling a load of ice cream that had caught on fire earlier this afternoon near Dallas.

Fire crews responded to a tractor trailer unit fire on the Trans-Canada Highway east of the city today, April 30. Kamloops Fire Rescue Capt. Jim Gorman says when crews arrived the trailer was on fire and the flames spread to the tractor.

"Crews had to shut down the westbound lanes of traffic and used a lot of water to extinguish [the fire]," Gorman says.

Black smoke could be seen from the city's east end. Gorman says it took about 30 minutes for firefighters to put out the fire and the rest of the time was spent cooling the area and ensuring the fire wouldn't spread elsewhere.

Gorman says the cause of the fire is being investigated. The tractor-trailer was carrying ice-cream.

Drive B.C. says there are still a lane closures but it appears traffic is moving through. All westbound lanes are expected to be open by 6:30 p.m. this evening.

For the latest on the lane closure, go to Drive B.C.'s website here.
