B.C. ELECTION 2017: Eye on the Kamloops-South Thompson race

From left to right, Kamloops-South Thompson MLA candidates Nancy Bepple for the B.C. NDP, Donovan Cavers for the B.C. Green Party and Todd Stone for the B.C. Liberals.

KAMLOOPS – The Green party and NDP candidates are fighting an uphill battle in winning the historically Liberal Kamloops-South Thompson riding.

In the past, the B.C. Liberal's blue flag has dominated this riding. In the past two elections, the Liberal candidates won by a significant margin.

Stone was elected to his seat in 2013 with 14,956 votes when he ran against NDP candidate Tom Friedman who garnered 9,204 votes. Conservative Peter Sharp and Independent candidate Brian Alexander were also in the running.

Liberal candidate Kevin Kruger was elected in 2009 with 12,548 votes, beating the closest competition, NDP candidate Tom Friedman with 8,132. Maria Dobi ran for the Conservatives and Bev Markle carried the flag for the Greens.

It's most likely that Green candidate and city councillor Donovan Cavers, NDP candidate and former city councillor Nancy Bepple or Liberal incumbent MLA Todd Stone will be standing at the finish line.

As of April 11, 2017, there are 42,054 registered voters in the Kamloops-South Thompson which stretches from Savona, to Westwold, to Chase, and everywhere in between.

Anyone who wasn't one of the 7,087 who cast a ballot during advance voting can vote today until 8 p.m.
