OKANAGAN - A local author’s third book in her award-winning series will be released this spring, and it will be focused on the Okanagan.

Jennifer Schell released her first book, The Butcher, The Baker, The Wine and Cheese Maker: An Okanagan Cookbook, in 2012. It features recipes made with locally sourced ingredients as well as stories from those who grow or make them.

Within a year, she followed it up with her second book, this time turning her attention to the coast. Her second book, The Butcher, The Baker, The Wine and Cheese Maker By the Sea won a Gourmand Awards and now her third book, which will be available for purchase in the spring, will return to the Okanagan — but that doesn’t mean a rehash of the same old stories.

“This is a brand new book,” author and photographer Schell says. “My goal is introducing people to the community in the Okanagan that is creating their food. They’re all passionate, amazing people and I love sharing their stories.”

Within the 250-page book are more than 150 local farmers, wine experts, cheese makers and chefs, as well as many others.

A major difference with this second Okanagan cookbook is Schell’s focus on a new generation of young farmers.

“These new young farmers are choosing this occupation,” she says. “Most of them have studied environmental studies and want to contribute to the community. A lot of them have young families and they want to prove they can do this.”

Schell has been working on the book since the summer, travelling around the Okanagan to meet people, collect their stories and take photographs for the book.

“The common denominator is passion,” she says. “My greatest pleasure… is sharing their stories and what they do.”

The Butcher, The Baker, The Wine and Cheesemaker In the Okangan will be available for sale beginning May 2016.
