VERNON - A prominent local businessperson has announced his intention to run for mayor in the upcoming municipal election.

Akbal Mund, known for his involvement in numerous local events and fundraisers, says he’s ready to take on a role at city hall.

“One hundred per cent of my focus will be looking after the City of Vernon,” Mund said in a media release.

Over the years, Mund has been president of the Vernon Soccer Association, director of Extreme Makeover Easter Seals Camp in Winfield, president of the Greater Vernon 2012 Winter Games, vice president of Funtastic, president of the North Okanagan Sports Society, vice-chair of the Terry Fox Run, and co-founder of Wendy’s Dreamlift Day. He was named Vernon Good Citizen of the Year in 2012.

If elected, Mind says he would “run the City of Vernon like a business."

“If I am elected mayor, I will look at some of the challenges facing our community, from economic development, our Arts and Culture, downtown redevelopment and revitalization, enhancing our sports and recreational facilities, and infrastructure upgrades,” Mund said.

He believes his leadership skills in the community are what the people of Vernon are looking for.

Mund said being a Wendy’s owner taught him to be creative, innovative, to treat his employees with respect and dignity and to think outside the box for solutions and to never take no for an answer.

“These are the same traits I will bring to city hall,” he said.
