And the most popular dog names in Kamloops are...

Tuxedo is one of a kind in Kamloops, he is the only licensed dog with that name (or any variation of.)

KAMLOOPS — So long to Fluffy, Spot or Rex—when Kamloops residents look for dog names they’re looking for something a little more, well, human.

According to licencing records at the City of Kamloops, eight of the top 10 most popular dog names may share their moniker with family, friends and co-workers with the exception of the single most popular name—Buddy.

While most names on the list are pretty typical—perhaps even boring—some dog owners took inspiration from TV or movies for names like Tramp, Snoopy, Scooby Doo, Marley, Cujo and Beethoven while others went for car inspired names such as Beemer, Benz and Audi.

Then there are the Star Wars inspired names (Chewie, Annakin, Yoda), hockey inspired names (Blazer, Bauer, Naslund, Linden, Crosby and even Bobby Orr) or alcohol inspired names like Tequila, Sinclair Grand Marnier, Shooter, Moonshine, Kegger, Kahlua, Guinness and Chardonnay.

Some among the more than 27,000 dog names include Ty Poo Boo Boo, The Cheat, Sexy Sammy, Schmuck, Scallywag, Nine O’Clock, Chicchina Banana, Cheekie Brat, C’est la Vie, Care to Dance and 4 Speed. Of course we cannot forget what could likely be called the most Canadian dog name in Kamloops-Timmy Horton.

The top 10 dog names in Kamloops:
10—Molly (190)
8 (tie)—Shadow (198)
8 (tie)—Sadie (198)
7—Maggie (206)
6—Bear (210)
5—Jake (216)
4—Charlie (218)
3—Bailey (250)
2—Max (305)
1—Buddy (419)

While adults impulse to name their dogs with people names, kids don’t quite think along the same lines. For fun, we polled some youngsters at Pacific Way Elementary. They suggested Thor, Cocoa, Duchess, Lucky, Spice, T-Bone, Oreo, Pippen and Sparky.

**Though there are currently about 7,700 dogs licensed in the city, the numbers we used represent licensed dogs in the City of Kamloops over the last 10 years. Last week we looked at the top dog breeds based on this information.
