KAMLOOPS - The controversial proposed Ajax mine topped the subjects most important to residents in a survey conducted on behalf of the city.

The survey only asked what issues were most important to residents, so while the mine topped the list, it doesn’t say whether residents support or oppose it.

Infrastructure and the city’s parks, recreation and culture sector followed the mine as the most pressing issues in Kamloops.

The survey authors say infrastructure should be a top priority for the city, as it scored high in importance and lowest in performance.

People were most satisfied with the recreation and sports programs, which had 93 per cent positive feedback, while infrastructure was least satisfactory, scoring only 66 per cent positive feedback and the highest negative feedback.

The survey is held about every three years, with the last one in 2012. Since the last survey the importance of infrastructure and recreation has risen dramatically.

Overall the survey found the community believes it has an above average quality of life, with 94 per cent of respondents saying they had a good or very good quality of life, nine per cent higher than average.

The phone survey, conducted by Forum Research asked 409 Kamloops adult residents about their thoughts on the city. The majority were long time residents, couples and had at least graduated high school.
