War of signs, words an election tradition

Election signs spell out 'NDP=TAX'

People driving around the Kamloops-South Thompson riding have been treated to a bit of sign art courtesy of Todd Stone's campaign volunteers over the past week, but it quickly turned to a war of signs as NDP signs showed up alongside the Liberal ones near a busy intersection.

Stone's crew had put up signs earlier this week with a bit of artistic flair – spelling out words using several dozen signs. One spelling out 'TODD' can be seen from the junction of Hwy 5 and the TransCanada Hwy and another placed at Hillside Drive and Notre Dame Drive (near Walmart) sent a simple message of 'VOTE :)'

NDP sign crews quickly caught wind of the Hillside site and by the time Thursday morning traffic passed through 'NDP' was added in a similar fashion, utilizing Tom Friedman signs, and motorists reading all the signs together would see VOTE :) NDP and pictures of the new art quickly made the rounds on Twitter.

Friedman's campaign manager, John Ashton, says this type of war of signs has been done in past elections and is “a bit of a tradition.”

By the time Friday morning traffic was rolling through the intersection the message was changed once again. This time Stone's signs had been rearranged after the Friedman ones to spell out '=TAX' so when read in it's entirety all the signs spelled out 'NDP=TAX'

By 9:30 a.m. Friday all the small signs had been removed. Ashton says the plan was only to have them out for a bit, but now the NDP signs are needed for people's lawns, they are receiving requests for about 230 each day.
