WIENS TRIAL: Abrupt adjournment puts off case for one week

Family members of victim Lynn Kalmring gathered outside the Kelowna Supreme Court today, following an unexpected adjournment of the jury trial.

Final witness testimonies in the jury trial for Keith Gregory Wiens could not go ahead as planned today in Kelowna Supreme Court. After an hour and a half delay Justice Geoff Barrow advised the jury an unexpected issue had arisen between the crown and defence counsel.

Barrow told the 12 jury members they were to adjourn for a week time due to unanticipated circumstances by the crown or the defence.

“The upshot of it is, we can't continue with this case today, in fact we cannot continue with this case this week," he said.

Wiens is charged with second degree murder in the 2011 shooting death of his common-law partner Lynn Kalmring in their Penticton home.

Barrow explained he does not take the adjournment lightly but that it was necessary to protect the “ongoing integrity of this trial.”

Jury members will reconvene in court next Monday at 2 p.m.

Family members were visibly upset and began crying when the decision was announced in the court room today.
Outside the court one of the victim's sisters, Donna Irwin, said the delay was upsetting and that she and other family members had flown in to Kelowna for the trial.

"It's just hard because it keeps the emotions going and there's nothing we can do about it we just have to go with it," Irwin said.
