Voters get say on $1.55 million loan for policing office

The North Shore Kia dealership is the target location for the new Community Policing Office.

KAMLOOPS — The city is looking to use the alternative approval process for the $1.55 million loan needed to purchase and renovate a building for the new North Shore Community Policing Office.

Today council approved the process to authorize borrowing the money required to buy the current Kia dealership and convert it for the purpose. The city plans to purchase the property and then lease it back to the dealership for a year while the company searches out a new location.

The office has been at the current location at the corner of Fortune Drive, 8 Street and Tranquille Road for 13 years and the move would offer more room, easier access and overall better facilities. The new space would help reduce the burden on the downtown location by relocating officers, equipments and programs to the downtown detachment.

While eight staff members and 40 volunteers would be moved the new North Shore location all evidence, sensitive materials and jail cells would all remain at the Battle Street location.

Under the approval process at least 10 per cent of the eligible electors, in this case 6,836, would need to register concern by Feb. 21. The amount is repayable over 15 years.
