'THEY CAN SUCK OUT MY PSYCHO. I HATE PLANET EARTH'
KAMLOOPS - A Barriere man told the court today he is 'against violence,' despite admitting to chasing a man with a chainsaw this summer.
"This is a one of a kind set of facts," Crown prosecutor Frank Caputo said today during sentencing submissions. "It seems like it's cut right out of the movies."
Wyatt Proulx, 25, born in Kamloops and raised in Barriere, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder today in Kamloops Provincial Court. Instead, he pleaded guilty to a lesser count of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes after admitting to chasing a man with a chainsaw in August of this year in Barriere.
Caputo said police arrested Proulx within nine minutes of being called, but it was a bizarre nine minutes. Proulx told police he would act as his own lawyer and said, "I am a lawyer, unless I'm surrounded by prison dogs. They can suck out my psycho. I hate planet earth."
A mattress was found cut and a chair presumably used for self-defence was found cut into two pieces right down the middle.
"This is a very odd situation," Caputo said.
Caputo acknowledged Proulx suffers from mental health issues. He joined defence lawyer Murray Armstrong in recommending a two-year prison sentence with the maximum probation term of three years.
Armstrong called the incident an 'episode' of Proulx's mental health issues and asked the judge to impose a recommendation to the Regional Treatment Centre in Abbotsford, a decision typically left out of a judge's hands.
"(It is) best in the long run for Wyatt," he said.
When asked whether he would like to say anything on his own behalf, Proulx had one comment.
"I am against violence."
The judge reserved his decision until Wednesday morning.
