Midway through a campaign to collect and safely dispose of weapons by police in the province, Kamloops is reporting high seizures compared to a much larger counterpart to the west.
Kamloops RCMP has seized 17 firearms while the Vancouver Police Department has seized 37.
Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said it doesn't surprise her that Kamloops' numbers seem high.
"You'd almost expect that," she said. "We're more of a rural type of place."
The gun amnesty allows people to hand over guns, weapons and ammunition without legal ramifications so long as they have not been involved in criminal activity. It is a joint effort among police departments throughout the province and is ongoing throughout the month of June. Bush said the majority of items collected so far in Kamloops are long guns, many of which belonged to a former generation and were passed down to those who don't want them.
"You see more people that have long guns than what you'd see in a city centre," Bush said.
Over 600 firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition have been turned into RCMP detachments across B.C. since June 1. Police departments across the province have identified rifles, pistols, shotguns, pellet guns, starter guns and miscellaneous gun parts as the most common items.
Those interested in getting rid of a firearm, weapon or ammunition may contact a local detachment to arrange for an officer to attend and collect the items. Kamloops residents can call 250-828-3000.
The amnesty ends June 30.
