KAMLOOPS – Only a couple of weeks after Kamloops B.C. SPCA Branch Manager Charleen Holloway said it would be a miracle if the shelter would be able to reopen before the new year due to a ringworm outbreak, she received the good news they would be able to partially reopen the doors Monday.
The shelter first got confirmation of ringworm in some of the animals the first week of November. They immediately shutdown to begin testing and treating the 79 animals in care at the time. By the time it was all said and done more than two-thirds of the animals tested positive for ringworm and were forced to undergo lime dip treatments.
This week has been a much better one for the shelter-on Tuesday they got word a large percentage of the animals were free of ringworm allowing them to partially reopen next week, and New Gold employees brought in more than $9,500 in donations raised for the branch during the staff Christmas party. On Wednesday it was announced the shelter would reopen Monday, Dec. 16 with regular business hours (noon to 4:30 p.m.) Some dogs, cats, kittens, rabbits and a gerbil are all clear of the infection and ready to be adopted.
As part of the reopening the branch is joining several others across the province in hosting an adoption promotion on cats and small animals. The 50 per cent off adoption fees sale will take place from Dec. 16 to Jan. 4 and will apply to cats, kittens and rabbits.
The Kelowna, Cowichan, Nanaimo, Parksville-Qualicum Beach, Alberni-Clayoquot, Powell River and Salt Spring Island branches are all hosting a promotion on cat adoptions this month as well due to the overwhelming number of felines in care. Several branches, inlcuding Kamloops and Vernon, held the same sale over the summer when an influx of cats left the shelters needing to find new homes for the animals fast.
While it is reopening to adoptions, the branch is not yet taking in any new animals because the intake area is still under quarantine.
