Record low temperatures heading our way

More cold weather is on the way and several low temperature records could be broken.

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN – If you thought last week was cold, you haven't seen anything yet. A system expected to bring a lot of cold air to the region early next week could result in record lows across the Interior.

An arctic front is moving over the Interior Sunday which will bring significantly colder air that will settle in Tuesday through Thursday. Existing record lows for December 3-5 range from -17 Celsius to -25 C, and Doug Lundquist of Environment Canada says lows could reach the mid-teens to lows 20s next week.

“It's not impossible that we'll get record breaking low temperatures,” Lundquist says. “It can be pretty cold this time of year.”

We will likely see some snow and rain as the system moves in but the end of next week, when the warm air starts to move back in, could result in some heavier snow fall. After that we should be back to hovering close to seasonal normal temperatures of around 0 C.

The temperature of Okanagan Lake still sits around 12 C in the deeper areas, which helps moderate the temperature of the air. The colder temperatures in the mountains are absent of snow patterns over the next week so even though it is colder and the lower elevations will see precipitation, the ski hills may not get the snow they are hoping for.

The cold temperatures could also affect extreme weather shelters, which will likely fill up as the freezing temperatures hit. In Kamloops the Out of the Cold Shelter opens 28 beds on Wednesdays and when temperatures drop below -7 C, while the Gateway Shelter in Vernon offers 10 beds. In Penticton 20 beds are offered at the Cold Snap Inn when temperatures drop below -10 C.
