PENTICTON - RCMP took down a prolific offender Wednesday who was carrying an assault rifle and a pistol fitted with a silencer.

Andrew Robert Hardenstine was busted on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. when he came out of an apartment building in the 100 block of Roy Avenue carrying weapons, a sack full of ammo and a bottle topped up with drugs. The arrest was a result of an investigation into Hardenstine's activities since his recent release on court imposed conditions.

Penticton RCMP officers watched him enter and exit the apartments with a backpack and what appeared to be a large firearm, draped in cloth, sticking out of the backpack.

Police moved in to arrest him after he exited the building and got on a white and orange motorcycle. Hardenstine made a break for it but collided with an unmarked police car and fell to the ground. He scuffled with one officer, broke free but was snatched up by other nearby cops. One officer had a wrist broken.

Hardenstine was carrying an SKS semi-automatic assault rifle with folding stock, a loaded 9mm handgun with laser sight and silencer capabilities, a plastic bottle with 100 ml of GHB and 50 shotgun shells, 73 9mm rounds and 10 rifle rounds.

As a result of the arrest, police used a search warrant at an apartment unit in the building and arrested and released a Penticton woman, 40. She is facing a possession of a controlled substance for purpose of trafficking charge. The RCMP scooped up trafficking gear along with crystal meth and about 800 ml of GHB.

Hardenstine was to be in Penticton court today but was taken to a prison instead. He's been charged with two failing to comply with bail conditions, five firearm possessions, obstructing a police officer, two possessions of crystal meth and one possession of GHB.
