Property tax exemptions for more than 80 groups

KAMLOOPS – Property tax exemption applications are in and staff is recommending council approve more than 80 applications for the years 2014-2016.

More than 40 churches and about 45 other non-profit organizations that submitted applications qualify for tax exemptions.

There are fewer places of worship this cycle as no new applications were filed and a couple of properties were sold. Places of worship are granted statutory exemption under the Community Charter when approved by council. Vacant land and lots used exclusively for parking, if not in direct relationship to the place of worship, are not eligible for permissive tax exemption.

Non-profit organizations are offered a three-year phase in period and could face caps on the amount allowed for tax exemptions. More than 30 already qualify for the full exemption, a few will see two-thirds exemption in 2014 and then a full exemption for 2015 and 2016 while the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce begins the phase in period at one-third after it moved earlier this year.

Meanwhile Domtar, Lafarge, Tolko and Arclin are once again asking council about lowering taxation levels for heavy industry. The group collectively approached council earlier this year asking for a decrease in the amount of tax it is required to pay but only got half of what it was asking for.
