UPDATE: Pedestrian hit at college crosswalk

A pedestrian was struck and injured while using a crosswalk on KLO Rd. Tuesday morning.

KELOWNA – A pedestrian was struck and injured while using a crosswalk on KLO Road Tuesday morning.

The 21-year-old man was crossing KLO at Casorso Road and a witness says the driver of the black car that hit him probably didn't see him.

Tammi Bjornson saw the accident happen in her rear view mirror shortly before 9 a.m. She had just passed the crosswalk headed east and saw the man step off the curb. She says the sun was low on the horizon and made spotting the man difficult.

“I don’t think he saw him at all,” she says. “He didn’t even slow down.”

Bjornson says she saw the man hit the car’s windshield with his shoulder before crumpling to the ground. She estimates the car was traveling at around 40 km/h.

“When he hit the ground he just stayed still,” she says. “He could move his neck but his shoes came off and his hands were cut up.”

The injured man was wearing a backpack and was walking in the direction of the college.

The Kelowna RCMP say the man was taken to hospital with potentially serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident. After careful consideration of circumstances, no charges will be laid.
