Royal Inland Hospital administrator Marg Brown says 22 of 27 elective surgeries planned for today have been cancelled in an effort to help alleviate the pressure created by overcrowding.

Currently at more than 130 per cent over capacity Interior Health authorities are working with community partners as they try to deal with high volumes that have not followed normal seasonal fluctuations. Brown says community partners feature several "home first" style programs that get people in need of care other options instead of going to the hospital first. A mental health initiative links patients with family physicians instead of them having to rely on hospitals for their care.

"We are working together so we can best as possible put the right person in the the right place at the right time," Brown says of the alternate level of care strategy Interior Health is working towards.
