Two open-house information sessions will be held this week regarding a proposed open-pit copper/gold mine causing a stir in Kamloops.

"We're introducing the town of Kamloops to the KGHM International team," said Normon Thompson, community relations manager for the KGHM International Ajax copper and gold project.

The company took over the project from Abacus Mining and Exploration Corp. in September.

Sessions will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 15 and Wednesday, Jan. 16 at the Coast Kamloops Hotel and Conference Centre from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Stations will be set up with about 40 KGHM staff members available for information and questions. There is no registration required.

"Anybody who wants to know where we're at with the project, people that are interested and want to tell us what their concerns are (should attend)," Thompson said.

He said there will be similar events held in the future.

"We're working on the environmental assessment process at the moment," he said adding that it will go through a 180-day public consultation period when it is released.

Kamloops councillors have mostly stayed mum on the issue while waiting for the assessment by the federal government. Stakeholders await the assessment for clarification over the impacts it could potentially have on surrounding areas including Cherry Creek, Peterson Creek, Inks Lake and Jacko Lake. The Kamloops Area Preservation Association has been vocal in opposition of the mine citing environmental impact as well as the location of the mine, largely within city limits, as problematic.

Thompson said he expects positive results from the assessment.

"Everybody on the team is working towards that goal."
