KAMLOOPS - RCMP are calling the actions of two Kamloopsians 'selfless and heroic' after a man fell into the river yesterday unconscious.

A 53-year-old man was taken to Royal Inland Hospital with minor injuries, however police are saying it could have been worse had two lifeguards not been there to jump in after him.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said the two lifeguards were riding their bikes nearby when they saw the police officer.

"They were just instantly in the water," she said.

Police had received a report of an intoxicated man wandering in North Kamloops along Nelson Avenue, towards the North Thompson River.

When RCMP found him, he appeared to have fallen down the shale rock embankment, bleeding into the river.

RCMP called an ambulance, but it seems that the lifeguards did the heavy lifting.

Bush said they assisted and stabilized the male until emergency personnel arrived on scene. The man was taken to hospital after his tumble into the water.

"He had lacerations as a result of the rocks," Bush said.
