Part of job to voice question and concerns when public health is an issue
KAMLOOPS – City physicians have joined the fight to protect the area in and around Kamloops by forming an organization geared towards promoting health education and science based interventions to maintain and improve the environment.
The catalyst for the latest health and environment focused group is once again the proposed Ajax mine. They launched a website, filled with information about air quality, the proposed mine and the environmental assessment process, earlier this week as well as a Facebook page at the beginning of the month.
Kamloops Physicians for a Healthy Environment formed earlier this year after the group realized many colleagues share concerns over medical research about negative health effects of air, water and soil pollution by large industrial projects and the potential health impacts of the proposed mine.
The non-profit organization plans to convey their concerns to the public, the health ministry and all levels of government. They join several other groups already lobbying against the mine including Kamloops Area Preservation Association (commonly referred to as KAPA), the Kamloops Community Advisory Group and Kamloops Moms for Clean Air.
The advisory group recently held a press conference to talk about the need for more studies to be included with the environmental assessment process. The government has since approved the information requirements for the project. KGHM is expected to submit the environmental assessment application in the fall. The city plans on hosting a public information session during the six month review period follow the submission.
