Latvian takes Granfondo 2013's top prize

Granfondo 2013 racers smile as they approached the Main Street finish line at Gyro Park on Sunday.

PENTICTON - Andzs Flaksis of Latvia won Sunday's biggest bicycle race, a 160-kilometre long journey, in three hours, 55 minutes and 13 seconds.

He competed in the granfondo portion of the 2013 Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan cycling event. More than 2,500 riders came out to compete on Penticton's streets and Okanagan Valley highways. Clayton Meisner from Kelowna was the only Okanagan Valley competitor to place in the granfondo's top 10. Meisner managed the 160 km trip in three hours, 57 minutes and nine seconds.

The mediofondo route was 92 km and Kelowna's Cordell Dickie got the best time with two hours, 18 minutes and five seconds. Marco Bruggeman of Kelowna took 10th place with 2:24:14.

The 55 km cortofondo route was conquered by Jordan Delaney of Kelowna with a time of 1:35:08. Tracey McQuair of Penticton came in third with 1:36:40.

The weekend was also jammed with other activities at Gyro Park which served as the finish line for the racers. There was a climbing rig set up for youth, massages offered to riders and wine and beer tent areas.
