KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops man was seriously injured after being hit by an out of control vehicle while standing on the shoulder of Highway 1 in Chilliwack Monday afternoon.

Fraser Valley Traffic Services RCMP says the man was driving a 1998 Subaru station wagon westbound when he lost control between Annis Road and Highway 9 shortly after noon on Family Day. He slid into the ditch but was able to regain control, exit the ditch and pull over on the side of the highway. The 31-year-old driver exited his vehicle and was standing at the back of the Subaru when another vehicle lost control and struck him.

The 44-year-old driver of the second vehicle, a 2006 Nissan SUV, and the occupants of both of the vehicles were not injured. The driver of the Subaru was taken to a Lower Mainland hospital by air ambulance with serious lower body injuries.

RCMP say weather and road conditions may have been contributing factors but have not yet ruled out speed, vehicle mechanics or driver error. Witnesses are asked to contact lead investigator Const. Owen Hazlewood at 604-702-4039.
