KAMLOOPS – Over the River and Through the Woods kicks off the Mainstage 2013 Festival of Plays at Sagebrush Theatre this evening as one of 10 plays that will be run over the next nine days.

The annual provincial festival includes nightly performances at Sagebrush Theatre as well as courses, green room events, critiques and an awards ceremony. The long running Theatre B.C. festival begins in April when about 60 community theatre groups participate in the zone festivals for the chance to play at Mainstage.

The Okanagan Zone festival took place mid May in Vernon with five groups featured during the event. The Kamloops Players presented God of Carnage and while Cherie Poelzer did receive an adjudicator’s merit award for most unique performance, the play lost out to Venus in Fur by the Fred Skeleton Theatre group out of Kelowna.

The plays from around 10 zones around the province will face adjudication by Dean Paul Gibson immediately afterwards and the following morning coffee critiques will offer people the chance to take part in an in depth discussion on the previous day's play with the adjudicator and the cast and crew at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre.

Following the plays each night, themed green room events including roaring 20s, pirate ship, land of heroes and villains, circus and 80s rewind, will take place at the Pavilion Theatre. Courses on stage management, social media marketing and stage makeup as well as a selection of courses for actors will round out the week

Saturday night the Thespians awards ceremony at the Convention Centre and a “Casino Royale” casino night at Pavilion Theatre will top off the week. Kelowna sculptor Gert Maas creates the bronze sculptures awarded as trophies during the awards ceremony.
