Higher ticket price for patient care tower business plan

The dream of a new patient care tower just got more expensive. The bill for the requested business plan went from an estimated $500,000 to $700,000.

PENTICTON - The new patient care tower just got a little pricier thanks to the cost of a requested business case going from $500,000 to $700,000.

The Okanagan Similkameen Regional Hospital District will now be asked to fork over $282,000 instead of $200,000 to cover 40 per cent of the bill as explained by Regional District Okanagan Similkameen chief administrative officer Bill Newell. The regional district meeting approved the change in funding today.

Newell said the business case was priced at $500,000 but this was put together on very short notice for the Ministry of Health. The business case request was made by Premier Christy Clark during her visit to the Penticton hospital in March. She said the province needs a plan if the region wanted its $300-million patient care tower.

Newell said Interior Health Authority had already completed a master plan for the hospital in 2002, a program review in 2008 and a conceptual plan in 2012 and they were all critical to the construction of a new patient care facility.

The business case is to be submitted to the health ministry for review by early 2014 and if it's approved it will go to B.C.'s treasury board for capital funding.
